2005-04-03: Over 10k pictures taken on my 828

Today, Mom and I took a trip out to the desert region around Julian. This excursion was due to the rains we've had out here in California, which produced desert flowers the likes of which haven't been seen in 100 years. At least, that's what Mom says. Our first stop was at Dudley's bakery, where they make bread. We picked up a loaf of jalapeno and a loaf of potato bread. We also saw an accident along the way. I was unable to get a good picture of the man's motorcycle, but it didn't look too bad compared to other wrecks I've seen. Not that any accident is good, but at least it looks like he didn't get run over by an SUV or truck after his crash. Photographically speaking, I'm particularly fond of this one, in which you can make out the paramedics and injured biker on one side, and the determined expression of an oncoming biker on the other.

Next up, we went wandering through a natural area. Mom stayed on the beaten footpath, while I followed animal trails and runoffs for the first part of the hike. I wound up with a few patches of wild mustard on my pants for my troubles, but I got some shots which I couldn't have taken from down low. I kept my eye out for rattlesnakes, but there weren't any. I wouldn't have wanted an up close and personal shot of one, but it would've been interesting to spot one and use a zoom lens on it. They're beautiful creatures from a distance, but up close they make me wish I had a shotgun handy. DISCLAIMER: I do not support the random killing of rattlesnakes. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with killing one if you intend to eat it, as long as it can be identified as one of the numerous species which are nowhere near endangered. Hunting isn't the same as extermination.

At any rate, the pictures can be found here, and I took a total of 639 on this trip. 558 made it past the elimination process at home, for a total of 1.9G of data. The day was a little hazy, and you can see a fair amount of thermal or mist distortion on most of the pictures. Perhaps I'll make a 'highlights' file later on.

Another thing of note is that we found proof of the existence of California rednecks. There were two seperate lines of mailboxes; the latter one was much longer than the earlier one.

Upon getting home, I determined that my camera had rolled over 10,000 pictures sometime during the day. Considering that I've made a total of $0.83 on Shutterstock.com now, right now I'm making a penny about every 122 pictures. We're talking high finance here, folks! I might retire early!
